African American Golf History Facts:

 

1948, Ted Rhodes , arguably the greatest African-American golfer (150 Titles), trailed Ben Hogan by three strokes in the first round of the 1948 U.S. Open at Riviera.

 

1937, Wake Robinson Golf Club , The country’s oldest women’s golf club was formed.

 

1930, “Hard Rock” Robinson became the personal caddie/assistant

to architect Donald Ross at Pinehurst.

 

1925, The United Golfers Association was formed.

 

1922, Joseph Bartholomew returned to New Orleans and later designed Pontchartrain Golf Course.

 

1921 Shady Rest G&CC, the first black-owned and operated golf club, was constructed in Scotch Plains New Jersey.

 

1910 A Walter Speedy led group sued  the city of Chicago for the right to play in a city run tournament.

 

1896; As a 16 year old, John Shippen became the first American born

Player to lead the U.S. Open (First Round).

 

1899; Dr. George Grant was awarded a U.S. Patent for the wooden golf tee.

 

Willie Dunlap wins Low Gross Championship at Myrtle Beach!

September 23, 2006; Myrtle Beach, SC. In a field of approximately 120 golfers, Willie T. Dunlap of the Pro Duffers Houston Chapter won the coveted (Joe D. Saunders) National Low Gross award. Willie shot scores of 71 (Arrowhead Course) and 73 (Myrtle Beach National South Course) to lead the field.
