Pro-Duffers Orlando, Southeast
|
For the past two years, I have been the President of Pro-Duffers USA. During that period of time, the following was accomplished:
• The incorporation of the organization
• The Patent of the Official Logo
• The development of the Operations Manual
• The start of the process for filing for a 501c(3) application - completion due in 2010)
Most important, however, was the Operations Manual for the organization. The majority of the sections included in the manual were those which were developed by the Chartering Clubs at their initial meeting. The major work for us (the Executive Council) was in putting the document together and adding what was deemed appropriate by the council. Bottom line, there is now a document that chapters can go to for written direction as opposed to word of mouth.
Another important happening during my tenure was the addition of a new chapter, Orlando, FL, to the Southeast Region and the reopening of the Central Region with the addition of a new Chicago Chapter.
I am totally committed to the well being of the organization. I have the time to work for the organization and I believe that the experience gained through my career years will greatly benefit the organization. My experience includes: Contract Negotiation; Strategic Planning; Fundraising; Course Development and Instruction; Personnel Management; Recruiting; Board Member; and Board President/Chairperson. I would like to have the opportunity to utilize any one or all of these facets of my experience to further the goals of the National Organization.

Currently, the two national events only support the recreational goals of the organization. Given the opportunity, I along with the Executive Council will work diligently to drive the civic goals of Pro-Duffers USA.
Right now I do not see more National events. However, I do envision at least one more in future years which will focus primarily on the goal(s) of our civic direction.
I have two extremely fond memories. The first was 2001, my first year as a member of the Pro-Duffers, and the National Meeting was on the verge of being canceled because of the 9/11 catastrophe. It came only a couple of weeks before we were to leave for Jamaica. The event was moved to Novermber and although lightly attended, I knew that based on the calibre of individuals that I met at that event that I had made the right decision in becoming a member of the Pro-Duffers. The second was a National Meeting that I was able to participate in as our club (Del Val) was the host club and I was able to see, feel and appreciate the enormous amount of energy that goes into planning such an event by club members and their spouses.

I see an organization that ultimately becomes a minority leader as was intended by its founders. We are currently working to that end. I am confident that the civic direction that is currently being drafted will go a long way in allowing us to achieve that goal

Pro-Duffers South (Memphis)

It was through my friendship with Pro-Duffer member John “Big Dog” Payne that I played my first round of golf. After the golf bug bit I began to hang around and play with several members of the Memphis Chapter weekly and participate in their local events. It is here I fell in love with the unique combination of camaraderie and professionalism offered by the Pro-Duffers that blended having fun while doing worthwhile deeds for the community. As a result I joined Pro-Duffers South in 1990 and have remained active in the chapter in spite of living out of the country for the past 12 years.
Although I have never held a local office, I have been very active on various committees, especially those involving our annual fund raiser / tournament for the Sickle Cell Council and Diggs Krauss Sickle Cell Foundation. On the national level, I acted as Chairman of the Nomination and Election Committee in 2006 and was responsible for the nomination criterion, slate of candidates, and marshalling the organization through the election process. At the 2008 National Convention I was elected Parliamentarian.
|
I believe the Spring Fling and the National Convention and Tournament directly reflect the stated goals and purpose of the organization to “promote and encourage a greater interest by its chapters, members and public in the game of golf and related social civic and charitable activities.”
I believe the above events are sufficient from a national perspective. I believe this is enough on the plate of the individual members and chapters to sponsor and participate in the national events and fulfill local goals and commitments. However, strategically, I believe as a national organization we should be getting “more bang for the buck” out of the two events.
My most memorable national event was my first in 1991 at Deer Creek Golf Resort in Myrtle Beach, NC. I was totally overwhelmed by the fact so many Black men could get together in fun and spirit (also lots of spirits) and golf. I remember Joe D. and his command of the tournament, the all night poker games, and most of all Dan Mask and the “Calcutta.”
|
Under the leadership of President Chuck Stradford and as sitting Parliamentarian, I have combined my professional knowledge and experience as an attorney to incorporate Pro-Duffers USA, Inc. as a Delaware not-for-profit organization, applied for a service mark / trademark for the national logo with the US Patent and Trademark Office, and currently participating in the application for 501 (c)(3) status for a to-be-formed, Pro-Duffers USA Foundation. In addition, I have provided written Parliamentarian's opinions interpreting rules and organizational procedures.
If elected, I plan to continue in the current efforts to provide national exposure to Pro-Duffers USA. I envision Pro-Duffers USA hosting a major fundraiser of national significance and magnitude.

Thank you for the opportunity to continue my service to Pro-Duffers USA as a national officer with your vote of confidence.
